Commuter trains have been an important part of the Milwaukee Road's presence since before 1900 and the Milwaukee road played an important part in the development of the village. Here a two coach train moves through the village from Elgin on the way to Chicago. This photo is probably from the 1940's. It represents a typical train of the era immediately preceding dieselization.

This engine is a ten wheel, or a 4-6-0- type, meaning it has four front wheels, six driving wheels, and no trailing wheels. It was constructed in 1907 and scrapped in 1948.

As an interesting side note, a steam engine was nicknamed "choo choo train" because of the sound made when the piston opened to release the steam. The steam was under tremendous pressure and went "choo" when it was released. For more information and photos about the railroad, go back to the Main Menu and click on Businesses.
