Beginning roughly around 1992 until the end of the ‘90s, Britpop ruled the airwaves and pop culture across the Atlantic in what was known then as “Cool Britannia”. Drawing from influences such as ‘60s pop, ‘70s glam, artsy punk, and ‘80s indie rock, Britpop was a reaction to the decidedly dour grunge movement coming out of America at the time. The movement embraced sunny melodies and all things English, particularly from a working-class perspective. While generally apolitical in nature, Britpop did offer much commentary and satire on the topic of the class structure that has always been deeply embedded in the fabric of British society. Wary of being pigeon-holed, many successful Britpop groups began embracing more experimental and esoteric influences. Many more bands simply broke up. As much of Britpop’s imagery and attitude was highjacked by mainstream acts such as the Spice Girls, a new wave of British bands arose (ex. Radiohead, Coldplay) that would go on to find much larger and international success than their Britpop forerunners.
