Late one summer night in 1948, a young couple parked on a lovers’ lane in Oregon, Illinois was attacked and murdered. The case set off a massive manhunt and garnered newspaper headlines, but went unsolved.
Fast forward 50 years… A scandalous theory and pushes for a new investigation and grabs the attention of two writers. Ted Gregory, a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter at the Chicago Tribune, is the author of Mary Jane’s Ghost, the offbeat, nonfiction account of the case. Novelist Jack Fredrickson’s treatment of the murders and the investigation that followed is Silence the Dead.
Join us in welcoming both writers as they provide their engaging, informative and slightly irreverent perspectives on the case. They’ll speak about what drew them to the story, its bizarre twists and eerie elements, conspiratorial hints and broader significance.
